"Maayavi", directed by Singampuli, is a Tamil black comedy featuring Suriya and Jyothika, with a supporting performance by Vijayakanth. The fictionalised story of how rival sociopolitical factions converged on the nascent motion picture industry in Los Angeles to use its placid surface as a battleground, the original film’s plot saw a small-time crook kidnap a celebrity to pledge revenge only to find himself forging a new connection with her.

Vel Balayya (Suriya) is the hopelessly charming and street-smart thief who dances to everybody’s tune, leads an extravagant life of crime and has a lot of fun while doing it with his goofy sidekick Sathyaraj (Sathyan). Their luck seems to have turned when one day they break into a luxurious beachfront bungalow, not knowing that it belongs to popular actress Jyothika (playing herself). Upon being caught red-handed, they are readily arrested and jailed. Furious at their defeat and humiliated at being rescued, Balayya swears vengeance. Once released, he pulls off a kidnapping of Jyothika that is quite daring, designed to soften and teach her a lesson. Initially, Jyothika is scared out of her wits, but over time, she gets to know different facets of Balayya, his mischievous sense of humour, his honesty, and his rough charm that conceals a tender heart. In the process, the film industry and police climate begin to grapple with her disappearance.

Over the course of her newfound time with him, Jyothika gradually gets to know and understand Balayya’s domain. She comes to understand that he is not merely an ordinary criminal but instead a tragic figure, formed by the crucible of poverty and survival. Balayya, in return, respects her and doesn’t hurt her. After several days in hiding, he safely returns her to the city, setting off panic among all classes. Before leaving her for the final time, he gives her a touching gift, developing pictures they took while she was held hostage, which represents a friendship neither of them ever expected to have.

"Maayavi" tackles this setup in a wonderfully quirky and offbeat manner, blending crime, comedy, and heart in equal measure. Charming, mischievous and with heart in spades, Suriya is magnetic as the laid-back hero. Jyothika rings true in a self-parodying role. Beautifully shot and with an unusual storyline, wonderfully funny situations, and unexpected chemistry between the leads, this film is a delightful ride. It stands out for turning a dark premise into a surprisingly warm and humorous tale.
