Maharasan is a G.N. Rangarajan-directed 1993 comedy film. It starred Kamal Haasan, Bhanupriya and Ramesh Aravind. Talking about breakthrough performances, the film centres on Selvi, who meets and ultimately marries Vadivelu, a sensitive slapstick butcher from the wrong side of the tracks. When she hears that Vadivelu had promised to get his sister married before marrying himself, Selvi decides to help him find a groom for his sister so that she can help the man she loves marry her.

Vadivelu, a widowed butcher living with his teenage sister Rani, becomes embroiled in an escalating dispute with his neighbour Selvi, who is in love with him. Rani cannot help but fall in love with Ramesh, who happens to be in love with a boy named Selvi. She falls in love with Ramesh, and Selvi eventually discovers that she wants Ramesh and Rani to marry so that Rani can marry Vadivelu. Paramasivan and his wife Vadivelu, who are in a professional feud, attempt to reconcile by bribing Vadivelu to vote for Paramasivan in the election.

However, their relationship is strained when Vadivu falls comatose, and Paramasivan must identify the child who is not his biological son and the lover his wife cheated on him with. The family becomes a competition to win their father's love, and in the climax, Sekar's father-in-law tries to murder Paramasivan and accuses Ramesh of poisoning his father. Vadivelu saves the day by revealing that Selvi is the daughter of Paramasivan and Vadivu. When Sekhar’s father-in-law sticks explosives on the family’s wedding gift trays, Vadivelu saves the whole family and arranges for Paramasivan to propose to Selvi, with Paramasivan consenting on her behalf. It’s a rich portrait of the ties, tensions, and contradictions of family in the search for love and belonging, so deeply entwined with history and selfhood.

Maharasan promises to be a charming comedy that mixes humour, family drama and romance into a feel-good, fun flick. Brimming with offbeat characters and out-of-the-blue plot turns, the movie explores love at first sight, mistaken identity, and the pandemonium that follows when families go head to head. Fueled by electric performances and an upbeat story, it’s filled with as much heart as it is with humour, ensuring that moviegoers looking for feel-good stories with a little bit of heart will have the time of their lives at this one.
