“Maidaan” is a Hindi biographical sports drama film directed by Amit Ravindernath Sharma, stars Ajay Devgn as Syed Abdul Rahim, the legendary football coach who defined Indian football from 1952 to 1962.
Following India's humiliating 10-1 loss to Yugoslavia at the 1952 Olympics, “Rahim” was criticized by the football federation. He is determined to reorganize the team and goes scouting for players from all over the country, building a new team with players such as Tulsidas Balaram, Peter Thangaraj, and P. K. Banerjee. In spite of opposition from within, he took India to a historic fourth position at the 1956 Olympics, but politics and media opposition forced him out.
In 1960, India tied with France at 1-1 but was left behind at the Olympics, causing the dismissal of Rahim. Immediately after this, he is also diagnosed with incurable lung cancer. In deteriorating health, Rahim battles to become a coach once again, assuring to deliver a gold at 1962 Asian Games. Rahim gets the government to finance the team despite only being given permission to bring 16 players.
In Jakarta, India is plagued with injuries and political tensions but recovers with aggressive play. Before the final against South Korea, their team bus is attacked by protesters. Despite his declining health, Rahim makes a compelling speech, inspiring the team. India is victorious 2-1, and it captures its first and only football gold medal at the Asian games.
"Maidaan" is a celebratory tribute to Rahim's spirit and imagination. Ajay Devgn is superb in his performance communicating Rahim's passion and pain. The film manages both a quality showing of hard-fought football and an imbalance of emotional strength in honouring a less-known hero of Indian sport.
