“Manmadan Ambu” (2010) is K. S. Ravikumar’s Tamil romantic comedy film, written by Kamal Haasan. The film stars Kamal Haasan, Trisha, and R. Madhavan in lead roles. The story follows a suspicious fiancé who hires a detective to spy on his ex-lover, only for things to take a heartfelt turn when truth and emotions collide.

Ambujakshi, a popular actress, goes on a European cruise vacation with her friend Deepa and her kids. Her ex-boyfriend, Madhanagopal, though still insecure and believing she’s cheating on him. To make the point, he hires Major Mannar, a retired army officer and now private detective, to pursue Ambu. Ambu is virtuous, and Mannar’s libellous report clears her name. Madhan doesn’t want to pay him because his doubts are not cleared. Facing dire need for cash for his best buddy Rajan’s cancer treatment, Mannar concocts a wicked lie, claiming that Ambu is in a sexual relationship. As he integrates further into Ambu and Deepa’s family life, Mannar grows closer to them and starts developing romantic feelings for Ambu.

Mannar later reveals his painful past: that he lost his beloved wife in a car crash three years previous. Ambu is horrified to learn that she triggered that crash while arguing with Madhan. Once the facts reveal themselves, Ambu confesses her feelings for Mannar, misidentifying another woman as Madhan’s sleuth. Madhan opens up his mind to meet Ambu, and that's when Mannar and Deepa plot a plan to make him confess it to break up. What ensues is a recipe for confusion, drama, and misunderstandings. Eventually, Madhan understands that Ambu really loves Mannar and selflessly allows her to go free in a loving gesture. Rajan makes it through the surgery, and they all fly back home to India. As Madhan begins to develop a friendship with Deepa, Mannar and Ambu come out with their feelings for each other.

“Manmadan Ambu” blends humour, emotion, and romance in a breezy travel setting. Kamal Haasan’s writing adds depth to an otherwise light-hearted tale. With charming performances, especially from Trisha and Haasan, and a unique storyline involving love and forgiveness, the film offers a refreshing take on second chances in relationships.
