"Massu Engira Masilamani" (2015), or Masss, is an action horror comedy film directed by Venkat Prabhu in Tamil. Suriya plays dual roles with Nayanthara and Pranitha Subhash playing co-stars in the film about a witty con man who acquires the power to view spirits and becomes involved in a greater mystery relating to his own past.
Masss (Suriya) is a petty thief who resides with his buddy Jettu (Premji). Following a botched heist and car accident that kills Jettu, Masss manages to survive with the peculiar power to see and converse with ghosts. He starts utilizing this talent to stage mock exorcisms and make money. His life changes when he encounters Shakthi (Suriya), a ghost identical to him who assists him in bringing down thugs, although for secret motives. Shakthi manipulates Masss into murdering broker Anthony. When more ghosts come, Masss becomes exhausted and sends them off, then comes to regret this and begins granting their dying wishes. In the meantime, Shakthi goads Masss into murdering additional men, Anthony's business partner Madhi, and eventually R. K., a wealthy man with a criminal past.
Kamal (Riyaz Khan), a former inmate, discloses that Shakthi was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer and is in fact Masss' father. A couple of years back, Shakthi travelled to India with his wife Anu and children Megha and Masss, to donate land for an orphanage. But R. K., Anthony, and Madhi murdered his family and set Kamal up. Now, as the truth is revealed, Masss takes it upon himself to complete what Shakthi initiated. After a final showdown, Masss kills R. K. and assists Shakthi in achieving peace. He loses his ability to see ghosts afterward.
"Masss" combines horror, comedy, and emotional drama with a good performance by Suriya in two roles. The combination of fantasy and revenge in the film keeps the audience interested. The father-son twist of events provides emotional depth, which turns out to be an entertaining experience with a heart.
