“Maya Puthagam” is a 2024 Tamil fantasy thriller film written and directed by Rama Jayaprakash. The movie features Ashok Kumar and Abarnathi, supported by Srikanth, Aadukalam Naren, and Madhankumar Dhakshinamoorthy.

The film is about Guru, a budding filmmaker who is tormented by recurring nightmares of an unknown book and a snake. One day, a holy man tells him that his dreams are meant to be interpreted. Guru then goes to producer “Sambasivam” (Ilavarasu) and decides to shoot his next film project in an old deserted palace in a dense forest. But Sambasivam's son “Vikram” (Dasarathy) is against Guru, as he has his own secret plan for the palace.

As Guru steps into the spooky forest palace, he finds a mysterious book and a painting of a lovely lady. As soon as he begins reading, strange things start to happen. There is an unseen power that guards him whenever Vikram's men attempt to kill him. Gradually, Guru comes to know that the palace conceals ancient secrets, such as a curse related to Princess Panchamadevi (Abarnathi), who was cursed as a revengeful serpent centuries ago.

The second half of the movie picks up gradually as Guru and his group arrive at the palace, with some tries at comedy falling flat. In the second half, the scenario is set to a historical era, and it is discovered that there is a war between the Ratnapuri and Selvapuri kingdoms. The visual effects fail to present this period drama effectively, rendering the battle scenes unbelievable. The love affair between Panchamadevi and Yoga Narasimhan is short, and the army chief's betrayal is shallow.

Though the fantasy elements are promising, the film is marred by slow movement and budget constraints. Yet, the intrigue of the palace and Guru's quest to unravel secrets buried long ago keep the viewer interested. “Maya Puthagam” tries to merge cinema, mythology, and the supernatural with a novel premise, though the execution is wanting.
