“Mookuthi Amman” (2020) is a Tamil fantasy comedy film directed and written by RJ Balaji. It is produced by Ishari K. Ganesh under the banner of Vels Film International and features Nayanthara and RJ Balaji in pivotal roles.

The film is about Engels Ramasamy (RJ Balaji), a petty news anchor who resides with his single mother, grandfather, and three sisters in Nagercoil. With his family's bad reputation and father's abandonment, Engels has his marriage proposals continuously rejected. When their pilgrimage to the Venkateswara Temple is cancelled, they go to the run-down Mookuthi Amman temple at Vellimalai instead. There, upon cleaning up the temple, Mookuthi Amman herself (Nayanthara) appears to Engels, declaring him a chosen child who is to restore belief in her temple.

In the meanwhile, the corrupt godman Bhagavathi Baba (Ajay Ghosh) intends to establish a selfish empire by manipulating people's religious sentiments. Engels, with the help of Amman's guidance, penetrates Baba's organization to get evidence. Complicating things further, Engels finds out that his long-lost father is now one of Baba's devoted followers. Through Amman's help, Engels gets a job in a big TV network and unashamedly reveals Baba's deception on live TV. Amman next appears at an open event, revealing the true power of faith rather than fear. Baba is humiliated in public and disowned. Amman finally grants Engels one wish before she vanishes, leaving a lasting impression of confidence in oneself.

“Mookuthi Amman” is a wise social commentary aiming at blind belief and the commodification of faith. RJ Balaji utilizes humour and fantasy motifs to underscore the message: correct belief exists inside oneself and not in godmen claiming otherwise or unyielding idols. The film challenges the exploitation of religion to achieve something in return and makes audiences resist exploitative behavior. Through a blend of comedy, religion, and social observation, it offers an informative but entertaining experience.
