“Naadu” is a Tamil drama film directed by M. Saravanan and features Tharshan and Mahima Nambiar. The movie is based on a remote mountain village fighting to keep a doctor on hand to save lives.

The movie begins with a gloomy sequence, a young woman from the village commits suicide. She was the hope of the village, a would-be doctor who scored high in the district but couldn't clear the medical entrance exam. With no resident doctor, the village has witnessed a lot of preventable deaths. Each doctor assigned there asks to be transferred owing to the stringent living conditions, and the hospital building remains vacant. The villagers, in their need for medical attention, hope for a fresh chance when “Dr. Shobana” (Mahima Nambiar) posted.

This remote village is totally alien to Shobana. The villagers, depicted as simple and heartwarming, take it upon themselves to make her stay. At the forefront of the endeavor is “Maari” (Tharshan), the handyman and the brother of the late girl. He goes to great extent to assist Shobana in settling, hoping that she won't leave them like the rest. There is also a sub-plot around his father, who passed away from cancer but whose demise was kept a secret from Shobana to prevent her from leaving since she had sworn to remain as long as he was alive.

“Naadu” is an emotionally riveting study of ambition versus duty that deals with not only the difficulties of working class life in rural areas, but the importance of health care access. Naadu juxtaposes emotion and tenderness and becomes difficult to watch. “Naadu” is a lasting film with good performances and a socially conscious subject.
