“Nella Nira Sooriyan” is a 2024 Tamil drama by writer-director Samyukta Vijayan and producer Mala Manyan under First Copy Productions. A strong and moving tale of identity, bravery, and acceptance is what the movie has to share.

“Aravind”, an educator from a small town in Tamil Nadu, is the focus of the film. He attempts to change himself from male to female in a very conservative social environment. Aravind has had a secret life since childhood, and she feels trapped in a world that does not accept or understand her real self. While becoming Bhanu, she is resisted by her family, friends, and the society around her.

The camera captures Bhanu's battle within and resolves. At one of the earliest scenes, we witness her practicing voice feminization, trying to get that perfect speech, which would capture her real persona. At another, she is removing the chest binder, which is a mild but strong movement in her odyssey. When she finally enters the world as Bhanu, she nervously double-checks that she looks just as she has always imagined, fighting dysphoria and self-doubt.

Central to the movie is Bhanu's family life with her mother (Geetha Kailasam), who struggles to reconcile that her son has become her daughter. The movie examines their emotional struggles sympathetically, illustrating the agony of misgendering as well as the gradual acceptance process.

With its new and fresh approach towards Tamil queer films, “Nella Nira Sooriyan” stands among the top films ever made on gender identity. Samyukta Vijayan's exceptional performance makes the journey of Bhanu one of great relevance and inspiration. The realistic storyline and unapologetic feelings of the movie make it an essential film to watch for everyone.
