Directed by K. Subash “Nesam” is a romantic comedy film. Stars Ajith Kumar and Maheswari in the main roles. The movie follows Nathan, a budding entrepreneur who, after being denied a loan for his new venture by a finance manager, starts to date the man’s daughter to get a leg up. Madhu spurns him when she learns that his first advances were not to woo her from the start.

Raganathan, also known as Nathan (Ajith Kumar), wants to start a poultry farm but refuses a bank loan from a suspicious bank manager (Sathyapriya). Loan shark Narasimman (Gaoundamani) proposes that Nathan court the manager’s daughter, Madhu (Maheswari), to earn her protection. With his friend Thanikachalam’s (Senthil) help, Nathan goes through several plans to impress her, and eventually, Maheswari falls in love with him. Nathan, for his part, falls in love with her in the process.

When, against her better judgment, Maheswari allows herself to fall for Nathan, conflict erupts as her mother advises her not to trust him and risks repeating her own experience with a false love. Against all odds, Maheswari persuades her mother to approve the loan. Once she’s overheard by Nathan and his friends laughing about duping her mother into the loan, Maheswari feels betrayed and withdraws. Misunderstandings quickly multiply until both, overwhelmed by heartbreak, choose to take their own lives together. In the climactic scene, they’re wheeled into the hospital, where they discover the extent of their love for one another and are reunited joyfully in the end.

“Nesam” is a romantic comedy that balances comedy and drama to navigate concepts of trust and true love underneath the lies. The intimate, character-driven story chronicles a young man’s sometimes desperate, determined efforts to get through to an initially incredulous, resistant family, only to deepen the emotional trauma with sometimes catastrophic misunderstandings. In the end, it provides a poignant concluding promise, the power of love to heal and bring together.
