“Nilaave Vaa” (1998) by A. Venkatesh, though it might superficially resemble just another romantic film in Tamil cinema. Starring Vijay, Suvalakshmi, Raghuvaran and Sanghavi. The Tamil film, Nilaave Vaa, tells a different story about Siluvai, a Christian man in love with Sangeetha, a Hindu woman, who is already engaged to another man, Siva. Even with her father’s vehement disapproval of their interfaith relationship, Siva, knowing that they share an unconditional love, decides to prioritise their happiness and intervenes to help bring them together.

Siluvai, Cruz’s son, is a Tamil Christian who lives in a previously idyllic fishing village in Kanyakumari District. Back at home in Varattar, Shreeram’s hometown, Perumaal and his daughters Sangeetha and Gauri continue to take care of the family household. When Sangeetha visits the fishing village, she and Siluvai fall in love and eventually become engaged. Things get messy when Gauri starts falling for Siluvai’s buddy. With the realisation that her staunch Brahmin father Perumaal would never allow a Hindu-Christian inter-religious union, Gauri takes matters into her own hands and decides to elope with her sweetheart.

This unplanned elopement creates bad blood between the families and results in the cancellation of Siluvai and Sangeetha’s arranged engagement. The attack feeds xenophobia and bigotry, causing the village’s societal peace to tremble. Just when things look like they can’t be fixed, Siluvai’s pal Siva enters the picture. Realising the profundity of Siluvai and Sangeetha’s love, he gives an emotional speech to the villagers asking for their acceptance and love. His words inspire the community to action, resulting in the reunion of Siluvai and Sangeetha in a warm and spirited happy ending.

“Nilaave Vaa” brings to the screen a beautiful story of love, faith and acceptance that is intricately laced with strands of cultural, societal and religious disparities. Featuring emotionally rich characters and a notable theme of togetherness, the film offers a heartwarming story that promotes empathy and altruism. While its plot may focus on romance, the implications of everything from sex work to gentrification at large are rooted deeply in the narrative, lending a powerful, unflinchingly human experience to viewers.
