"Paramasivan" is a 2006 Tamil action thriller film directed by P. Vasu, starring Ajith Kumar, Laila, Parakam S Raj and Jayaram. The real-life tale centres on Subramaniyam, who was sentenced to death for murdering six policemen who had killed his father and sister. When a jihadist terrorist group engages in mass slaughter, one intrepid police officer comes to him and asks for his support in stamping out this heinous organisation.
Subramaniyam Siva is behind bars, awaiting his execution, having exacted vengeance upon the killers of his dad, SI Ganapathy, and sister by killing the corrupt cops. One particularly honest and fearless cop, SP Nandakumar, is given the special assignment of going after the core terrorist organisation that perpetrated the Coimbatore blasts. To do this, he recruits Siva’s assistance, providing him with a new identity as Paramasivan, changing his look by cutting off his long ritualistic hair, and directing him exclusively towards locating and eliminating the terrorists behind the bombings. Unbeknownst to Paramasivan, Nandakumar has been ordered to kill him after the mission is over. At the same time, CBI officer Nair is chasing Paramasivan, trying to prevent his vigilante violence, with the help of the bumbling, funny SI Agniputran.
Paramasivan’s mission gets personal and brutal as he hunts the terrorists and their crooked cop accomplices. In the climactic moments, he learns that Nandakumar actually intended to eliminate him after the mission’s success. With guidance and wisdom from Nair, Paramasivan faces the betrayal, fulfils his quest, and finally seeks and wins forgiveness. The film concludes on a positive note as Paramasivan begins a new life with his paramour, Malar.
"Paramasivan" is a high-octane commercial action thriller packed with high emotional drama and fast-paced action. Ajith Kumar is muscularly charismatic as the man pulled in directions of revenge and redemption. The movie strikes a great balance between suspense to keep you on the edge of your seat, dramatic and emotional scenes, and lighter comedic relief that is a joy to experience. Though the storyline doesn’t shy away from adhering to tropes we’ve seen many times before, it’s really the execution of the strong story paired with Ajith’s commanding screen presence that makes this such a fun watch, especially for fans of glamorous, action-packed Tamil cinema.
