“Periyanna” (1999) by S.A. Chandrasekhar is a super action thriller in Tamil cinema. It stars Suriya and Meena in the lead roles, while Vijayakanth appears in a cameo. The plot centres on a political prisoner who, while teaching music to the daughter of a district collector, ends up falling in love with her. To avoid being found, the pair runs away and gets married in a neighbouring town, where they find friendship with that town’s chief, who provides them with hospitality and shelter.

Suriya, having avenged the despicable murder of his entire family by gunning down the assassins, is sent to jail. As the minister of a large congregation, he nonetheless bears witness to his daughter’s birthday in the gaol. Amazed by Suriya’s remarkable skills in violin percussion, the minister’s daughter seeks special permission to train with him. As the lessons continue, the two young women unexpectedly fall in love, attracting the ire and disapproval of her wealthy family and police officials alike. When they come under increasing pressure, the couple elopes.

They move out to a small town, from where they are involuntarily witnesses to the daylight murder of a district collector at a railway station. Much to their surprise, the locals are still unbothered, and they quickly find out that the person orchestrating such a killing is the feared village chief, Periyanna. Determined to hold him accountable, the couple fights back, only to discover the truth about his history. Over time, they become smitten with him, and Periyanna vows to fund their romance by performing their marriage. As the story races to its climax, the suspense shifts focus from whether Periyanna can keep his word to whether the girl’s father will prevail in using the parameters of the legal system to rip them apart.

“Periyanna” is a dramatic action film that blends themes of justice, redemption, and love against a backdrop of rural power struggles. With emotionally driven character arcs and a layered narrative, the film shifts from personal vengeance to social commentary. It brings experiences of body and emotion, complication and beauty. It wrestles with the clutter of human nature and the complications of moral action. An unforgettable story that truly strikes a balance between thrilling action and dramatic character moments, combining intense grit with deep emotion.
