“Petta Rap” is a 2024 musical action comedy film directed by S. J. Sinu and produced by Jobi P. Sam. The film is starred by Prabhu Deva and Vedhika Kumar and is full of dance, action, and humor with a retro touch added to Prabhu Deva's style.
The film is about “Balasubramaniam” (Prabhu Deva), a budding artist aspiring to be a famous action hero. Though rejected more than 100 times at auditions, he never loses heart, as he feels his time will come soon enough. Supported by his family with no hesitation, he never gives up, even as life continues to knock him down.
But his life takes a turn for the worse when he misreads an incident on a film set and causes chaos and gets blacklisted in the film industry. When he thinks his aspirations are destroyed, he encounters “Jeni” (Vedhika Kumar), a famous dancer with a hidden past that connects her to his. As his affair with Jeni grows more intense, Bala is drawn into a personal mystery: on which he is linked to a top crime syndicate.
Unbeknown to him, he becomes the target of two ruthless gangsters, who see him as a threat to their criminal activity. As Bala tries to clear his name, he has to use his intelligence, charm, and dance skills to stay one step ahead of danger, while also learning startling truths about his family and his own history. Along the way, he is treated to surprising turns, laugh-out-loud moments, and high-energy musical numbers that add color to the high-octane narrative.
“Petta Rap” relies on Prabhu Deva's energetic dance steps and retro references to his old hit "Kadhalan" and is a treat for the audiences. The movie is, however, marred by a weak script and formulaic plot and doesn't reach its full story potential. Though the music and Prabhu Deva's energetic performance make it a fun ride at places, the movie ends up being shallow and unoriginal, rendering it an average watch.
