“Poovellam Kettuppar” by Vasanth is a hugely popular musical rom-com movie of 1999. The film stars Suriya and Jyothika in the lead roles. The movie tracks Janki as she starts getting to know Krishna and, after a few hiccups, begins to fall in love with him. When they discover that their fathers are hostile foes, the star-crossed lovers promise to marry only if both families agree.

Bharathi and Kannan were once amicable friends and collaborative music directors. Following an acrimonious showdown on a collaborative project, Bharathi decides to part ways with Kannan and write independent music, allowing Kannan an opportunity for redemption in the future. Kannan declines and shares their fallout with the press, resulting in Bharathi losing a movie deal.

Kannan’s daughter, Janaki, along with her husband and young family, now lives in Bangalore. On one such college tour, she encounters Krishna, the son of Bharathi, who, at first sight of her, falls head over heels for her but gets turned down at first. After a string of incidents, Janaki ends up on a contentious women-only bus, where Krishna makes an effort to win her over. In the process, the two fall in love with each other and learn more about their fathers. Krishna promises to talk to his father about marriage, and Janaki agrees to wait for her parents’ approval.

While tempers flare, Krishna goes undercover as a taxi driver outside Kannan’s home, and Janaki as a nurse. Things get intense once they’re both forced out of their environments. Bharathi acknowledges his mistakes and accepts Janaki into his life again. After some difficulties, Janaki and Krishna finally admit their love to their parents. They reach a compromise to hold on until Kannan’s consent, which triggers a hostile-to-consentuality transition where Kannan eventually accepts their love and patches up with Bharathi.

One of the most creative films of the 90s, “Poovellam Kettupar” is a sweet musical romantic comedy that combines tinkle-tinkly comedy and pathos with domestic drama and family dynamics wrapped around an entrancing soundtrack. A whimsical but profound adventure that hits all the feels while keeping on the hilariously whimsical side of the perfect entertaining/meaningful balance.
