“Por” is a Tamil action thriller movie directed by Bejoy Nambiar and produced by T-Series Films & Getaway Pictures. The movie stars Arjun Das, Kalidas Jayaram, and T. J. Bhanu, and it is about college rivalry, friendship, and deeper societal issues.
The movie follows the lives of “Arivu” (Arjun Das) and “Surya” (Kalidas Jayaram), best friends who study in two different colleges. When their respective colleges are presented with a chance to take part in a cultural festival, their friendship is put to the test. What starts as a friendly rivalry soon turns into a bitter one, with the two friends on opposite sides. With feelings running high, their decisions result in tragic outcomes, and they end up questioning their integrity and loyalty.
In its very nature, “Por” embodies the intensity and abandon of college students and amplifies their conflicts in a hyperbolic manner. Unlike most campus rivalry movies, this one raised the stakes so that the battle between the characters was fraught with implications.
The movie also cleverly interlaces political and caste-based motifs, which would have otherwise felt misplaced in a less skilled film. But the creators treat these with restraint, so they flow naturally into the story without seeming contrived.
Though “Por” survives on its engrossing premise and good acting, its amplified drama and populist appeal might not click with everyone. Some parts appear overplayed, but overall narration is captivating. The movie strikes a balance nicely between its vibrant energy and substance, rendering it an engaging movie despite all flaws.
