"Por Thozhil" is a Tamil-language investigative thriller released in 2023 by Vignesh Raja, who directed it, and Applause Entertainment, who produced it. The film stars R. Sarathkumar, Ashok Selvan, and Nikhila Vimal in leading roles, and the story follows an intricate murder investigation.
The setting is 2010, and the story tracks Prakash (Ashok Selvan), an anxious but astute DSP trainee, who is put in charge under veteran SP "Loganathan" (R. Sarathkumar). Technical assistant "Veena" (Nikhila Vimal) accompanies the trio to Tiruchirappalli from Chennai to investigate the gruesome killing of a young woman. The fact that the crime involves strangulation with iron wire after the victim was knocked unconscious puts Loganathan on guard for a disturbing trend.
As more young women are killed in the same way, Loganathan believes a serial killer is loose. The victims have no common link, but they are all of the same age and are murdered in the same manner, which indicates a psychological motive killer. Their investigation leads them to Kennedy, the son of a retired inspector, who has symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder and an unusual fascination with anatomy and pressure points.
While Kennedy is now a prime suspect, the absence of concrete evidence keeps him beyond reach. When Prakash finally confronts him, a startling revelation about Kennedy's traumatic childhood and past criminal connections comes as a shock. In a final gesture of guilt, Kennedy kills himself in an explosion to save his son from knowing the truth. The case is not over yet, however.
The team tracks down Muthu Selvan, who is responsible for the latest murders. In a tense climax, Prakash shoots Selvan in self-defence, saving Veena just in time.
"Por Thozhil" blends psychological depth with investigative drama. With strong performances and a steady pace, the film offers a dark, well-structured thriller that holds your attention till the end.
