Gollapudi Srinivas’s Prema Pusthakam is a 1993 romantic crime drama. The film stars Ajith Kumar and Kanchan in lead roles. The movie centres on two privileged private university college students who are unexpectedly kicked out of school, and since they have no home to go to, they find themselves homeless and at the whim of the all too real realities of life beyond campus. Once separated by distance in search of new homes and livelihoods, it is their pain that renders them mighty and strengthens their passion for one another.
Sreekar and Charitra, previously high-achieving model college students, are abruptly expelled, turning their lives upside down and forcing them to fend for themselves. With the world turned against them and no one to come to their aid, they find comfort in each other and choose to risk it all by getting married, as they dream of starting a new life together. On the eve of their wedding, an extremely wealthy but morally despicable tycoon makes a move to rape Charitra, motivated by his greed and arrogance. In a frightening moment of self-defence, Charitra uses a sharp shard of broken glass to ward off her aggressor, causing the man’s unfortunate death. The event threatens to derail their future together, but they stand firm in their commitment to take on the challenge together.
The next day, while the newlyweds are celebrating with family and friends, police crash the wedding and arrest Charitra for murdering the businessman. Sreekar, unwavering in his devotion, does not choose to let her go, supporting her through the condemnation that society throws at her. Unfortunately, this round, the court convicts Charitra and incarcerates her, but Sreekar never abandons his quest, wishing only to clear her name and secure their mutual future together. Along the way, their quest unexpectedly becomes an epic and heartwarming odyssey revolving around love, loyalty and the battle for justice in the face of impossible odds.
Prema Pusthakam provides a powerful mix of romance and conflict, creating a beautiful piece using the struggles of raw emotion. The movie’s mood is full of desperation and frailty, almost as if the characters themselves are battling the elements as they try to stake their claim, their fraught relationship stretched thin at every arc. Suspenseful twists and heartfelt moments intermingle, creating a detailed and beautiful portrait of resilience and maternal love.
