Puranagar (2020)

"Puranagar" (2020), Minnal Murugan's gritty Tamil action drama, is a cinematic exploration of the life of Kamal (Kamal Govindraj), a Dalit young man from a rural village where caste domination is ingrained in everyday existence. Kamal is educated and ambitious but whose aspirations are constantly frustrated by institutionalized discrimination and the village elite who view him as a threat to their dominance. Following a bloody showdown with the village chieftain and his higher-caste cohorts, Kamal is obliged to vacate his family home. He moves to the industrial fringes of a nearby city, dreaming of starting anew. But Kamal also soon discovers that urban life has its own form of discrimination. At his factory work, he gets patronizing insults, wage discrimination, and social ostracism. There he encounters Meena (Suganya), a kind-hearted teacher who is both his love interest and emotional support. She too fights social stigma because of her background. Kamal also encounters a mentor in Ravi (Ashwin Chandrasekar), a former activist who once spearheaded similar struggles but now lives a disillusioned life. When Kamal's colleague is harassed and falsely accused on grounds of caste, he protests. Inspired by his boldness, downtrodden workers and villagers start rallying around him. Kamal leads a non-violent agitation for equal rights, fair compensation, and dignity. When the agitations increase in numbers, the local police, along with the ruling caste, violently suppress them. Ravi loses his life in a confrontation, which proves to be the turning point. Kamal, bruised but unbowed, gives a passionate speech that sets statewide agitations ablaze. "Puranagar" closes on a note of bittersweet victory, as Kamal walks back to his village as not a criminal, but a representation of rebellion. The movie excels because it takes its strong stance against caste politics seriously, supported by performances and barebones, emotionally raw storytelling. An unflinching social drama that never shrinks away from difficult truths.
