Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram (1977), directed by Durai, is a sci-fi action drama. It features Vijayakumar, Rajinikanth, Sumithra and Kutty Padmini. The film follows Raghupathi, a time-travelling police officer, who joins forces with his long-lost brothers Raghavan, a rebel hacker, and Rajaram, a street-smart illusionist, to stop a dystopian regime in future Tamil Nadu. Together, they must unlock their past and fight to rewrite history before time runs out.

Raghupathi, Raghavan, and Rajaram are three brothers who got separated in childhood after a tragic accident. Each grew up in a different part of Tamil Nadu, unaware of their real family. Raghupathi becomes an honest police officer, determined to fight crime. Raghavan struggles to pass civil service exams while battling poverty and corruption around him. Rajaram grows up on the streets and becomes a street performer, making people laugh and think with his shows. One day, a powerful politician is exposed by a journalist and is secretly murdered. Raghupathi is assigned to investigate the case.

Raghavan is falsely accused, while Rajaram unknowingly captures part of the murder during a street play, and the captured footage becomes primary evidence. Veeraiyan is an intelligent private investigator who works separately with the brothers to bring the truth to light, and as the three men communicate, they realise they are brothers as they all have an old family photo and the same locket. They bring the corrupt minister to light, and Raghupathi arrests him, and Raghavan is absolved of all charges. Rajaram becomes famous for his heroic act, and the brothers reunite and vow never to separate again. Justice prevails, and the family is once again whole.

Raghupathi Raghavan Rajaram is a more-than-fairly inventive mash-up of science fiction and action genres, providing an entertaining and original film that, while very intense emotionally, has a lot of excitement and good action sequences. The pacing brings a good mix of emotional moments along with high stakes and engrossing action sequences, where the emotional moments are weighed with respect and the action sequences are infused with fresh world-building. Although I am a sucker for this genre in general, the characters make this film appreciable while leading you to an impressive conclusion where the film's overall goals of issues of identity, justice, and brotherhood are reflected powerfully.
