“Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” is a 2022 Indian biographical drama directed, co-produced, and written by R. Madhavan, who also plays the lead role opposite Simran. The movie traces the inspiring and tragic life of “Nambi Narayanan” (R. Madhavan), a brilliant aerospace engineer at ISRO, whose bright career is destroyed after he is falsely accused of being a spy.
The movie begins with a contemporary TV interview by actor Shah Rukh Khan (Hindi) or Suriya (Tamil), in which Nambi narrates the success and failure of his life. From his early years at the Thumba Rocket Centre to receiving a scholarship to Princeton University, Nambi is seen displaying his intelligence and commitment to Indian space research. Presented with a fat offer at NASA, he rejects it and returns to India to work for ISRO.
Committed to the evolution of India's space technology, Nambi pioneers international collaboration, particularly with France and subsequently with the Soviet Union, to realize liquid fuel and cryogenic engine technology in India. His efforts bring forth the mighty VIKAS engine, an idol of pride for India's space program.
But before his efforts can bear fruit, Nambi is arrested on false accusations of spilling rocket secrets. He is tortured, ridiculed, and called a traitor. Following a prolonged legal battle, a CBI probe establishes his innocence and reveals a larger conspiracy to halt India's cryogenic advancement.
“Rocketry: The Nambi Effect” is a compelling and emotional biopic that not only narrates the tale of a forgotten hero but also unravels the dark underbelly of politics in science. R. Madhavan is outstanding as a director and an actor and brings to life a tale as painful as it is patriotic. The film is a must-see for its honesty, depth, and national importance.
