The caste system in India has been dominant and very much prevalent in the villages and rural areas. This has lead to widespread separation of people in places like temples, water bodies, etc. The story of Samar revolves around this issue. The film depicts how a small village in Madhya Pradesh has conflicts over a water pump installation. The altercation is between two different communities inhabiting the village. One of the members of the lower community, protests over the unjust decision and his house is burned down by unknown assailants. Devastated, the poor man goes to the village temple to pray and what he gets instead is beatings and abuses from the landlord who is disgusted by the man breaking the rule of the village.

Meanwhile the situation of the village is used to make a Bollywood film in Bombay, where the actors have to play the same characters as the villagers. But things don’t go as planned and there is chaos and misrepresentation, which leads to violence. The movie is directed by Shyam Benegal and produced by National Film Devl Corp of India. The star cast of the film includes Rajit Kapur, Rajeshwari Sachdev, Ravi Jhankal, Kishore Kadam and Seema Biswas. The cinematography is by Rajan Kothari.
