“Samurai” is a 2002 vigilante action film by Balaji Sakthivel. It features Vikram, Anita Hassanandani and Nassar. The film follows Thiyagu, a medical college student who adopts the persona of a samurai warrior to deliver justice outside the bounds of a flawed legal system. Fueled by a profound sense of justice, he hunts down patronage-sucking politicians and bureaucrats who game the system, turning him into an avenging angel-vigilante against deception.
Thiyagarajan, now a medical student, runs into his childhood friend Varadharajan and crosses paths with a schoolgirl, Deiva, who lives with her widowed, sickly grandmother, and is the daughter of a police officer, Sandana Pandian. Thiyagu gets caught up in a struggle to rescue a corrupt local politician from kidnappers, where he discovers that Sandana’s family is related to his friend after all. While Thiyagu goes on to abduct more victims, Sandana is torn between his inability to crack this case. Deiva is deeply traumatized when her friends attempt to kill her, forcing her to go back to her family, while Sandana unable to cope with the pressure, turns a blind eye to her problems. Thiyagu comforts Deiva, and she unknowingly develops feelings for him.
In the past, Thiyagu’s classmate Kavitha dies by suicide after attempting to blow the whistle on a pharmaceutical corporation for sending expired medicines. She implores Thiyagu to find justice for her. When they finally end up targeting a specific minister directing these crimes, Sandana comes to know the truth of Thiyagu’s involvement. Thiyagu tries to negotiate justice in exchange for releasing the kidnappers, but the law lets him down. Once a major calamity occurs, Sandana winds up on the other side, calling for tougher laws. Thiyagu departs together with Deiva, and as he walks away, he ponders and compares what he feels for Kavitha.
“Samurai” starring Vikram as Thiyagu, a medical student who takes down an evil hospital with a samurai character. Motivated by a sense of justice, he goes after the dirty politicians robbing the system blind. The film is a powerful mix of action-dominated scenes in breathless pursuit of justice and emotional scenes revealing just how broken our legal system is. It’s a powerful story of bravery, sacrifice, and the struggle against oppression.
