"Sanju Weds Geetha 2" (2025), helmed by Nagashekar, brings back the genre of romantic drama in Kannada cinema, starring Srinagara Kitty and Rachita Ram. Although it shares the title of the immensely popular 2011 Kannada movie "Sanju Weds Geetha," the filmmaker has made it clear that this is not a sequel in the strict sense, as the plot has no link whatsoever to the original.

The main plot kicks off after a fortuitous meeting between Sanju (Srinagara Kitty) and Geetha (Rachita Ram), who’s travelling to participate in the finale of Miss Karnataka. Inspired by Sanju’s gift, which encompasses and celebrates the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Karnataka, Geetha goes on to win the title. Hit by instant love, Geetha embarks on a journey to trace Sanju. As the daughter of a rich silk magnate, she’s met with opposition from her father (Sampath Raj) when she admits to her love. Still, as the novel ends, the young couple are married and setting out into a new life, separately indeed but together as well, and it is a possibility that brings hope and uncertainty.

The movie starts in the current day with Geetha waiting for Sanju on their 10th anniversary. Shooting an expensive short film in Copenhagen, an unexpected delivery arrives in the form of Sanju, who at a conclave in Hyderabad, surprises her by chartering a helicopter to land there. Just as she comes home, a tragic turn of fate suddenly shifts the trajectory of their lives and of so many other children forever.

"Sanju Weds Geetha 2" is a film that is all about nostalgia, and while that makes up for its charm, it turns out to be its biggest weakness. While the film tries to recreate the magic of timeless love, it stumbles with a dated storyline rooted in overused tropes, rich girl-poor boy romance, melodrama, and illness-driven conflict. Even with its attractive production and earnest performances, the film is undermined by a weak screenplay to become a passable romantic drama that quickly fizzes from memory.
