Singaaravelan

Singaravelan is a path-breaking rom-com film in Tamil cinema, which was released in 1992. It stars Kamal Haasan, Khusbhu and Jaishankar. The film follows Velan, whose mother sends him to locate and marry his cousin Sumathi, who has moved to the city. Armed with nothing more than a childhood photograph, Velan is on a quest to find her.

Velan, a simple and innocent young man who lives with his widowed mother Parvathy, begins an unsuccessful campaign to marry his mom’s brother’s daughter Sumathi, bringing together the separated family. Armed with nothing but a photograph of the girl, Velan journeys to Madras to find her and complete his mother’s last wish. Along the way, he encounters his pals Mano, Mani, Subha and Ramasamy, who join him on his quest. Velan’s friends, including Thaiyamma, Sumathi’s guardian, and Kaliannan Gounder, learn that Velan’s father is an industrialist who disowned him for choosing a life in music. Afterwards, Velan and his friends pressure Kaliannan into getting his father to lie about his family origins.

As Velan and Sumathi’s love deepens, they agree to become engaged. On the day of engagement, Sumathi finds out that Velan is the son of Parvathy and calls off the engagement. Shortly after marrying Sumathi, Natesan learns that Sivamani has been operating a counterfeiting unit in Sumathi’s house, printing fake currency notes. While Velan manages to evade the police and goes on the run, his close friends, his mother and Kaliannan are arrested as his accomplices. While Sivamani aims to murder Velan and marry Sumathi for her riches, Velan attacks him and reveals Sivamani’s evil intentions. Sumathi comes to understand Velan’s love and urges his family to negotiate her marriage to him.
