“Singappenney” is a Tamil sports drama film by JSB Sathish, featuring Shilpa Manjunath and Aarthi Saravana Kumar in the lead. The movie depicts the life of 15-year-old “Thenmozhi”, who is a rebellious teenager determined to become an athlete at the national level. With the guidance of her coach Shalini, she surmounts various odds in the shape of social pressures and individual challenges to achieve her sporting aspiration.

The film not only depicts the ascension of Thenmozhi as an athlete but also the plight of women in sports. The competition sequences and training are authentic, thanks to the casting of real sports persons such as Madhavi Latha and Aarathi Swaminathan, giving a realistic sheen to the sporting half of the movie. The dynamics between the mentor and the mentee are properly worked out, with Shilpa Manjunath essaying the role of a dedicated coach who tries her level best to help Thenmozhi.

But Singappenney stumbles when it defines its villains. The villains overdo it with their characterization, and their gestures seem forced and melodramatic. These caricatures detract from the sense of realism otherwise attempted by the film.

Though weak in many areas, “Singappenney” is a genuine film made with the best of intentions. It conveys a nice message about female empowerment without sounding preachy or artificial, and therefore works as a decent watch for sports drama and emotional genre followers.
