“Soorpanagai” is a Tamil thriller-mystery based on historical facts, directed and written by Caarthick Raju, with Regina Cassandra starring in the title role of 'Divya,' an archaeologist. The film uses contemporary-day investigation methods along with supernatural elements from history, following a track that dates back to the 1920s. Its Tamil name is inspired by the epic Ramayana's villain character Soorpanagai, the sister of King Ravana.

In the present era, “Divya” is deployed to a small town in the countryside for an archaeological expedition. While she's doing fieldwork, she's at a bizarre place where a foreigner is pulled into quicksand by an invisible force. During her further investigation, she discovers a 120-year-old woman's skeleton buried at the site. The real shock is that forensic examination of the skeleton's facial structure proves to be mysteriously identical to Divya's own.

It becomes even more bizarre when the local Deputy Superintendent of Police is brutally killed, with a spear lodged in his body. Fingerprints on the spear suggest that the killer is a young woman. This news, combined with the bizarre similarity between Divya and the ancient skeleton, generates confusion and horror. Divya's brother gets involved when he is attacked by a mysterious woman who is the spitting image of his sister. Divya is then torn between the past and the present as she tries to solve the mystery of the series of deaths and the woman who shares her face.

As the story progresses, the mystery deepens, weaving together ancient secrets, identity, and supernatural vengeance. Regina Cassandra has a dual role as Divya and Damayanti, providing layers to the suspense.

“Soorpanagai” is different from the rest in its blend of history, horror, and suspense. Regina Cassandra is great with a natural acting performance, and the two timelines add depth to the mystery. The eerie visuals and haunting soundtracks add to the atmosphere. Although some of the scenes were too long, the plot holds the viewer engaged. “Soorpanagai” is a gripping thriller with a good mix of archaeology and the supernatural overall.
