Directed by R. Thyagarajan, "Thai Veedu" is a 1983 drama. It features Rajinikanth, Anita Raj, Jai Shankar and Vijayakumar. The twist is that the movie centres on Raju, who, under the impression that Nagalingam is his father, steals a prized antique sword. Little does he know, the sword is his true father, Rajasekaran’s.
Rajasekaran, a rich man who possesses an ancient sword with the key to a treasure. A crook, Nagalingam, attempts it a dozen times but can’t. In one such attempt, a courageous man called Anand rescues Rajasekaran and is recruited to guard the sword. Meanwhile, Raju, a brain-car thief brought up by ex-thief Rajasingam, leads a modest life with his girlfriend Anita. Years ago, Rajasingam unwittingly stole a car that had a child, Raju, in it, not realising that the boy was Rajasekaran’s.
Years later, Rajasingam sees Nagalingam and thinks that Raju is his son. He provides Raju to Nagalingam, who employs him to pilfer the sword from Rajasekaran, his true father. Raju and Anand clash when Anand attempts to prevent the theft. When Raju finally manages to pilfer the sword, he is stunned by the reality of his origins. Realising his error, he teams up with Anand to whup Nagalingam and his boys. Together, they recover the sword and return it. Ultimately, he returns to his real family, abandoning his criminal life and finding solace.
"Thai Veedu" is an action-emotional drama with great performances and memorable music. The movie’s tempo keeps us engaged, interspersing action with emotional moments. Its issues of identity, loyalty, and redemption play well, a classic in its time. The cinematography and soundtrack add to the experience, providing both exhilaration and gravitas along the way.
