Thangathile Vairam (1975) is a heist drama by director K. Sornam. Features Sivakumar, Kamal Haasan, Jayachitra and Sripriya. The movie chronicles Raju, a talented goldsmith drawn into a high-stakes plot following the inexplicable disappearance of a priceless diamond necklace. Raju must race against time with Meena's help to expose the truth and clear his name as doubt starts to surround him.
Kumar is a well-respected jeweller in a small village in Tamil Nadu. Kumar believes in honesty and tradition above all else. Enter Raju, a young and talented goldsmith who comes into the village to make a name for himself. Raju then brilliantly designs and constructs a fabulous necklace with a rare diamond and names it "Thangathile Vairam" (Diamond in Gold) and brings it to Kumar's store for display. Kumar is in awe of Raju's abilities and employs him. Meena, Kumar's daughter, sees Raju working and falls in love with him slowly. However, Radha has feelings for Raju too, but she keeps them to herself.
As the family is getting ready to put the necklace on display at a grand local exhibition, the unthinkable occurs: the necklace is stolen. Kumar is utterly devastated and suspects Raju, while Meena is sure of his innocence. Raju takes it upon himself to prove his worthiness and finds that his stolen necklace was not taken by Kumar or Meena, but ultimately by a jealous rival goldsmith. After enduring lots of tension and searching high and low, Raju recovers the stolen necklace just in time for the exhibition. The family learns of the events and Kumar realises his mistake. He readily accepts Raju as part of the family. Meena marries Raju, and the stolen necklace represents a culmination of love and trust restored. Only Radha is devastated, but she conveys well wishes for their future together.
Thangathile Vairam makes for a gripping and intense movie experience, combining emotional elements with the suspense of a classic heist drama. The film works well as it serves a balance, providing a level of thrill and emotion, capturing the audience through entertaining character moments and increased stakes. The film has everything to satisfy any viewer, given that it is part mystery and part heartfelt story, and for its final scene and successful outcome.
