Thanikkattu Raja

“Thanikattu Raja”, directed by V. C. Guhanathan, is an action film from 1982 starring Rajinikanth, Sridevi, Sripriya, and Jaishankar. The story is about Soori, a mechanic with rebellious tendencies, who fights for justice and love, but is betrayed and devastated at the same time. When personal relationships and political agendas collide, he must choose whether to protect his family or fight for his people.

Soori is a young man with rebellious tendencies who works as a mechanic, and when the momentum baulks him, he inevitably finds it while defending what he believes is just. He falls in love with a wealthy girl, Vaani, whose father wants to separate them, using his manager, Vasu, to do so. In an altercation, Soori kills Vasu to defend Vaani's honour. The punishment is death. After receiving judgment, Vaani marries a corrupt, but authoritative man named Ethiraj, who abuses his political power to reduce Soori's punishment from death to a period in prison. Soori is heartbroken and turns to alcohol, and on leaving prison, he returns to his village, where he earns respect and loyalty by helping the villagers, taking risks to defend the poor people, and ultimately saving a girl named Vidhya from the threat of prostitution, which ends with him marrying her. However, he still struggles with alcohol.

Vaani, now stuck in an abusive marriage, encourages Soori to change. Meanwhile, Soori's sister Seetha falls in love with Ethiraj's brother. Ethiraj catches them and threatens Seetha, but Soori gives him three days to accept the relationship. Ethiraj agrees, but with a hidden plan, he believes Soori will support his corrupt political ambitions after the wedding. But Soori refuses and vows to oppose him in the elections. Enraged, Ethiraj gives Soori a cruel choice between saving his sister’s marriage or standing with the village. Soori decides he will fight for the people. He is planning on confronting Ethiraj, but Vaani intervenes. At the end, in the big confrontation, Vaani gets fatally stabbed when she intervenes to protect Ethiraj, and now she makes Ethiraj promise to follow her final wish on her deathbed, when she strives for Ethiraj to let go of his hatred and seek peace with Soori and to end their situation.

"Thanikattu Raja" is an enjoyable action drama that presents high emotions amongst the social conflict and is based on themes of loyalty and sacrifice, with justice as the eternal end goal. The film has strong performances and a story, it presents strong emotional scenes and a narrative that emphasises a story of the heart, betrayal, and also political corruption. The mix of well-placed action, sentiment, and ethical dilemma was a very entertaining piece that highlighted the failings of individuals through the limits of society.
