"The Road" is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language crime thriller film directed by Arun Vaseegaran in his directorial debut. Trisha Krishnan stars in the film, which is about Meera, a bereaved woman who embarks on a journey to find out the truth about a fatal accident that transformed her life forever.
"Meera" leads a contented life with her husband Anand, who is a wildlife photographer, and their young son Kavin. On the birthday of Kavin, Anand takes him on a road trip, but disaster strikes when their vehicle crashes into that of a businessman, killing both of them. Meera is devastated and, soon enough, she comes to the conclusion that perhaps the accident was not accidental. She sets out to investigate a series of similar crashes on NH 44.
Along with the assistance of a head constable, "Subramani", and her personal friend Uma, Meera gets to know the stunning syndicate of criminals involved in causing accidents on the roads to loot gullible victims. Her investigations take her to Prasad, someone she has trusted in the past, who is deeply committed to the syndicate. With Meera progressing towards the actuality, she finds herself trapped in a sinister game of intrigue and treachery. When she eventually solves the puzzle, she confronts Mayazhagan, the mastermind of the plan, and a ruthless smuggler named Padma, who also has an ulterior motive.
Although its interesting premise, "The Road" is marred by a slow narrative and a cluttered screenplay. Although Trisha performs well, the execution of the film fails to provide the tension required for an engaging thriller. Nevertheless, the film presents an interesting perspective on crime syndicates and road accidents, and thus it is a watch worth seeing for those who enjoy investigative dramas.
