"Time Illa" (2020), released by Manu Parthepan, is a Tamil comedy-fantasy revolving around Guna (played by Manu Parthepan), an atheistic IT software engineer whose reality becomes surreal as he contemptuously mocks a deity during a normal visit to the temple. Promptly after this, Guna gets a haunted, supernatural warning: he is given only 30 days in which to undertake some unspecified task or face death. At first dismissing, Guna starts to receive strange coincidences and inexplicable events that trouble his rational philosophy.

As time goes by, Guna must face unusual hints that appear to lead him to the secret task. Along the way, he meets offbeat and contrasting figures: a stern temple priest, a travelling mystic, and a spiritual yet earthy female named Renu (Monica Chinnakotla), who gradually comes to serve as his moral anchor. Despite his doubts, Guna starts to have doubts about his own beliefs with the supernatural clues increasing and the countdown intensifying. With every step, Guna discovers that his assignment can be linked with assisting people instead of saving himself.

The light-hearted moments are due to Guna's forced attempts at doing good and his encounters with Motta Rajendran, who is a side-splitting fortune-teller providing cryptic yet strangely accurate suggestions. When Guna's transformation starts, he finds that the task is not an isolated act but a journey of self-discovery and humility. On the last day, he rescues a little boy from an accident, an act that symbolically and practically redeems him. The curse is removed, and Guna finds a new sense of purpose in life.

Time Illa is reassuringly ambitious for its genre, finding a fine balance between fantasy and comedy with a genuine message. Despite the pacing getting slack at places, the film succeeds in presenting an introspective take on belief, fate, and personal betterment. It's a noble effort, especially as the first crowdfunded Tamil cinema project, offering laughter and food for thought.
