Ulagammai (2023)

"Ulagammai" (2023) is a Tamil drama film written and directed by V. Jayaprakash. Starring Gouri Kishan and Vetri Mithran, the film is an adaptation of Su. Samuthiram's novel “Oru Kottukku Veliye”. The movie is set in the 1970s and depicts the ordeal of a young woman fighting against caste tyranny and social biases in a rural village in Tamil Nadu. "Marimuthu", an elderly villager, brokers the marriage of his daughter, "Saroja", to Loganathan, a literate man. He requests Ulagammai, a diligent farmhand, to go along with Saroja when Loganathan visits to see the bride. Loganathan, however, makes a mistaken assumption that Ulagammai is the bride and consents to the union. On realizing the reality, Ulagammai apprises him, and the wedding is canceled. Insulted by rejection, Marimuthu holds Ulagammai responsible for dashing his daughter's future. Angered for revenge, he grooms the villagers against her and makes life a constant hardship for her. Ulagammai also faces challenges, navigating not only the political and contested land, romance, and the meaning of caste in a village-embedded in rural day-to-day life. As she advocates for justness and fairness, Ulagammai reflects courageous advocacy in oppression. "Ulagammai" tells a story touching on rural life in the 1970s, while compelling drama examines serious social issues the film captures.The film uncovers real issues of caste and gender discrimination which helps to also make it enjoyable and poignant. Gouri Kishan is compelling as she creates Ulagammai's power, bravery, and fragility on screen, and Kishan's range makes this accessible character alive, so we root for her and often identify with Ulagammai - whether we have been oppressed or not.
