Ullasa Paravaigal (1980)

Ullasa Paravaigal is a romantic action film by the director C. V. Rajendran. It features Kamal Haasan, Rati Agnihotri, Unni Mary and Major Sundarrajan. The film follows the son of a wealthy man who has a rare condition causing violent outbursts whenever he sees fire. Encouraged by a kind doctor and a devoted buddy, he sets out to reveal the buried mysteries of his past. Ravi, the arrogant son of a wealthy businessman, secretly suffers from pyrophobia, a deep fear of fire, due to a traumatic past. Concerned about his behaviour, Ravi’s father decides to send him abroad with his friend Raju for mental health treatment. With the help of Raju, they trick Ravi into going overseas. There, Ravi unexpectedly meets his childhood friend Nirmala, who soon reveals that he, not Raju, is the actual patient. Initially furious at being betrayed, Ravi finally comes around and agrees to therapy. In therapy, he reveals his trauma. In a flashback, Ravi shares how he once fell in love with a village girl named Shenbagam while managing his father's property. Shenbagam’s uncle opposed their relationship. One night, Ravi was secretly drugged by his father’s worker and tricked into meeting Shenbagam. They were caught, and in a rage, her uncle set the house on fire with Shenbagam trapped inside. Ravi tried to save her but failed, her death left him scarred. Later, Ravi learns that it was his uncle who plotted to kill him for property. After successful treatment, Ravi and Nirmala fall in love. Upon returning to India, his uncle sends goons to kill him, but with help from friends and Nirmala’s brother, they fight back. The film ends happily with Ravi reuniting with his friends at the airport, returning home. Blending psychological complexity with exciting scenes and sincere romance, Ullasa Paravaigal is an emotionally charged romantic action thriller.
