"Unarvugal Thodarkadhai” is a Tamil romantic drama film directed by Balu Sharma and produced by Sameer Bharath Ram under Super Talkies. It stars
Hrishikesh and Sherlin Seth, the movie tracks the path of a newlywed couple as they settle into their arranged marriage.
“Karthik” (Hrishikesh) and “Priya” (Sherlin Seth) are two strangers who are united in marriage by tradition, not by love. They navigate through daily problems, misunderstandings, and adjustments to settle into married life. Their relationship evolves through small quarrels, compromises, and realizations, bringing out the image of a modern-day marriage that is rooted on traditional values.
The movie tries to delve into the relationship of a newlywed couple but only does so on the surface. Though the premise holds promise for depth in emotion, the plot never goes into significant marital issues. Rather, the attention remains focused on petty conflicts and easy solutions, rendering the plot light and predictable.
One of the downfalls of the film is that it's constructed based on broad assessments of women and men. The cliches of "Men don't understand women" and "Women are more forgiving" are actually quite simplistic. It takes away from the believability of the relationship and characters.
Visually, the film is pleasant and cheerful-looking, befitting its low-stakes character. Priya's character feels one-dimensional herself, always taking a back seat to her husband and his dreams, and the demands of family and motherhood. Although Unarvugal Thodarkadhai paints a pleasant portrait of marriage, it doesn't have the seriousness and realism the film would take to make a long-term impact."
