“Vandae Maatharam” (2010) is an action thriller directed by T. Aravind, starring Mammootty and Arjun in the lead roles. Shot in both Tamil and Malayalam, the film follows two top police officers who rise to stop rising terrorist threats while dealing with personal and national challenges.

Gopikrishnan IPS, Deputy Director of Intelligence Bureau, who heads the task force to deal with the expanding and new terror threat in South India. He joins hands with Anwar Hussain IPS, a brilliant, hard working officer. At a time when the nation is reeling under internal dissent and enemy’s infiltration, RAW informs when a terrorist like Malik has crossed the sea border. Their pursuit takes them from a taqiyah cap discovered at the initial murder scene, all the way to an extended list of suspects, including shipbreaker Balan and Doctor Nayeem, who is later revealed as a major operative within the terror network. When Nayeem takes his own life, his phone provides enough clues to eventually lead the team to apprehend Malik. Though pushed to the limit of torture, Malik never divulges his intentions. In order to pull this off, Gopi and his team hatch a psychological trap, faking the appearance that Malik’s been in a coma for 20 years, using Gopi’s wife Nandini to pose as his adult daughter Kurshid.

The plan nearly succeeds, Malik finds out what really happened. In a tragic turn, he ends up killing Nandini and runs away. Enraged and heartbroken, Gopi and Anwar track him down before he can carry out his deadly plans. In the climactic confrontation, Gopi finally prevails against Malik, completing his deadly mission and avenging his spouse’s assassination.

Filled with action, patriotism, and psychological warfare, “Vandae Maatharam” tells a riveting tale of a nation fighting back. Mammootty and Arjun are convincing as dogged officers and the film retains the audience’s attention through a gripping, racy narrative. Even though the story takes a more tragic turn, it beautifully honors the lives saved by the sacrifices of those fighting for our national safety and the emotional scars it leaves on those who are called upon to serve.
