Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam (2013)

"Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam" (2013) is a Tamil romantic comedy film directed and written by Ponram. The cast includes Sivakarthikeyan, Sri Divya, Sathyaraj, and Soori. Two heedless youths cause all sorts of trouble in their village, but things change when one of them falls in love with the daughter of the stern village chief. The film introduces the police interrogating Sivanandi (Sathyaraj), a village elder, regarding his daughter Lathapandi's (Sri Divya) vanishing act. Bosepandi (Sivakarthikeyan) and Kodi (Soori) are two unemployed young men who run a local youth club called Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam. Bosepandi falls for a school teacher named Kalyani (Bindu Madhavi) initially and asks Lathapandi to deliver a love letter to her, but she tricks him. Subsequently, Sivanandi arranges Lathapandi's marriage without consulting her. She desires to pursue studies, and Bosepandi manages to put an end to the wedding by threatening to go and report it. Bosepandi gradually loses interest in Kalyani and begins falling for Lathapandi upon meeting her at a function. Bosepandi proposes to Lathapandi, but she refuses. When Sivanandi’s men attack Bosepandi, he and Kodi steal the village chief's gun and later return it in exchange for Lathapandi attending a friend’s wedding. Slowly, their bond grows. Her mother warns her about Bosepandi, while her father insists she marry someone he selects. On the eve of the wedding, Bosepandi elopes with Lathapandi. To everybody's surprise, Sivanandi quietly condones their love and facilitates their escape. "Varuthapadatha Valibar Sangam" is a romantic comedy that packs in charm and entertainment, with a big touch of countryside feel and lighthearted narrative. Sivakarthikeyan is simply an explosion of charm, Soori with his bravado-styled comedy, and Sathyaraj giving a very strong impactful performance that keeps the audience glued to the screen. The film is funny in most parts, and while the storyline is simplistic very good energy was injected into its execution. The film comes loaded with catchy tunes and energetic sequences and is a great entertainment package for all lovers of village romantic comedies.
