“Vaseegara” (2003) is a Kollywood rom-com film and a remake of the 2001 Telugu hit “Nuvvu Naaku Nachav.” Starring Vijay, Sneha, Vadivelu, and Nassar, the story revolves around Bhupathi, a carefree young man whose father sends him to Chennai to live under the mentorship of his close friend Viswanath and find employment. As Bhupathi settles into the household, he grows close to the family and unexpectedly falls in love with Viswanath’s daughter, Priya only to discover that she is already engaged.
Bhoopathy is an easy-going, happy-go-lucky Pollachi youth. His father, Mani Gounder, decides to send him to live with a family friend, Vishwanathan, in Chennai so that he can find a job and become more responsible. Vishwanathan’s daughter Priya has an NRI fiancé named Prakash. Priya and Bhoopathy frequently argue and prank each other. After some time, Priya falls in love with Bhoopathy. Even though Bhoopathy returns her feelings, he is mindful of his father’s warning not to bring shame and does his best to separate himself from Priya. Vishwanathan prevents him from doing so.
A little later, Priya, Bhoopathy, and Priya’s even younger cousin, Pappi, make a trip to Ooty for a wedding. At a bachelor party, Bhoopathy gets drunk and reveals his feelings for Priya. After the wedding ceremony, they go to Black Thunder, and a photographer manages to get a shot of them holding hands. Bhoopathy does his best to push Priya away, conflicted between his feelings and his father’s immutable prohibition against such emotion.
On the day before Priya’s wedding, Mani discovers that Priya is in love with Bhoopathy. When Prakash’s family then asks for ₹1 crore to allow the wedding to continue after seeing the hand-holding picture, it is Vishwanathan who refuses. Priya’s aunt Lakshmi finds out about Priya’s love for Bhoopathy and this prompts Vishwanathan to take a stand on the matter. At the train station, Bhoopathy attempts to convince Prakash to marry Priya, but Vishwanathan stands up for their relationship, and Bhoopathy ends up marrying Priya.
“Vaseegara” (2003) is A delightful romantic comedy that fuses together mirth, tenderness and family bonds, with the soundtrack being the cherry on the cake. Vijay is his usual charismatic self as Bhupathi, whose doomed love for an engaged woman develops with surprising restraint and nuance. Alongside the goofy charm provided by the talent of Sneha and Vadivelu, the film manages to give a good amount of lighthearted fun as well as tackle heavier themes such as love vs. sacrifice and traditional expectations.
