"Veera" (1994) is an action-romantic comedy by director Suresh Krissna, starring Rajinikanth, Meena, Roja, and Mahesh Anand. A remake of the Telugu blockbuster Allari Mogudu, the film tells the story of Muthu, who thinks his love Devayani has died and remarries another woman, only to have Devayani return, forcing him to marry her secretly as well. Now, he’s in the humorous pickle of trying to keep peace between his two new wives.

Devayani’s village Muthuveerappan, known as Muthu, is an illiterate village man who falls in love with Devayani, the daughter of a music teacher. In order to win her heart, he fakes it and learns music at first but actually undergoes a transformation when she challenges him. Then they meet, they fall in love, and they get secretly married. After surviving a violent assault from the landlord’s son, Muthu leaves for Madras to make money and help his family. There, with the assistance of a tabla player identity Ravikanth and the promoter’s daughter Roopakala, he eventually transforms into a hit, charming pop singer on Veera. Just as their love story begins, tragedy strikes when Ashwathama finds out that Devayani is presumed to have drowned in a flood.

In the meantime, back in Madras, Muthu’s music career takes off, and Roopa, who supported him on his way to the top, falls in love with him. Pressured by his mother, he relents to marry Roopa, all the while assuming that Devayani is as good as dead. To his utter shock, he later discovers Devayani to be alive, albeit afflicted with amnesia. To protect her and to keep from hurting Roopa, he remarries Devayani without telling her the truth. Muthu’s life becomes a hilarious and high-stakes comedy-of-errors as he shuttles between two households and continues to hide this bigamous double life.

Romance, humour and confusion are the key ingredients in “Veera," with Rajinikanth’s charm to guide the viewer. Meena and Roja infuse warmth and dramatic tension into the story. Through catchy music, feel-good comedy for the whole family, and an all-around interesting story, Veera is still that fun, dramatic, tear-inducing entertainer we’ve all come to love and adore.
