"Velaikkaran" (2017) is a Tamil action thriller film directed by Mohan Raja, featuring Sivakarthikeyan, Fahadh Faasil, and Nayanthara. The movie is about a young executive salesman who stands up to food adulteration and corporate malpractices. With a blend of social consciousness and commercialism, the movie exposes how corporate greed can influence daily life.
Arivazhagan, or Arivu (Sivakarthikeyan), is a socially conscious youngster from the Chennai slum of Kolaikkara Kuppam. He begins a community radio with the assistance of gangster Kasi (Prakash Raj) but subsequently fights to liberate his people from the grip of Kasi. Arivu thereafter works at Saffron, a popular food firm, where he masters the trade secrets from brand manager Aadhi (Fahadh Faasil). Tragedy strikes when his close friend Bhagya is killed for exposing adulteration in Saffron's products. Kasi learns that Saffron's president, Jayaram (Anish Kuruvilla), ordered the killing. Stunned, Arivu resolves to tackle food deceitfulness and joins Saffron's employees to battle for safe and honest business.
Arivu learns that Aadhi is actually 'Adhiban Madhav,' the offspring of a powerful business mogul. Aadhi’s true goal is to take over Saffron and control other major companies by continuing corrupt practices. He manipulates staff and burns stock of pure products to ruin Arivu's credibility. Yet, Arivu doesn’t give up. On the eve of May Day, he uses a radio broadcast to reveal the truth, inspiring workers to stand for values, not just bosses. In the end, Arivu’s message wins the people's support and defeats Aadhi’s plan.
"Velaikkaran" is a gritty blend of social awareness and entertainment. Sivakarthikeyan gets out of his comfort zone and delivers a straight, adult performance. Fahadh Faasil's Aadhi is raw, lean, and threateningly silent with depth to the narration.
