Director Rajakumaran, who brought the successful romantic drama “Vinnukum Mannukum,” with Vikram, Sarathkumar, Devayani and Khushbu to Tamil cinema. The plot focuses on Selvam, a foreign-returned bachelor who wants to marry the film star Devayani, a well-known film actress. When the proposal is brought to her by his older brother Sakthivel, she insults him, throwing him out as little more than a pathetic sub-continental peasant.
Sakthivel, a well-regarded and well-loved leader of his small Coimbatore district suburb community, shares a happy home with his wife Lakshmi and their younger brother Selvam, who just returned home after graduating from school in Singapore. Intensely loving of Selvam, Sakthivel and Lakshmi hope one day to see him wed and well settled. Selvam, ever the romantic, is bent on marrying a woman he only glimpsed in a dream. Later when he accidentally sees her picture in a TV ad commercial, he is shocked to learn that the girl is Devayani, a popular and beautiful film star. Fate does not stop there, the crew that will shoot the documentary film, with Devayani in the centre, coincidentally comes to shoot in their village! Now resolved to accomplish his brother’s last wish, Sakthivel decides that it is his responsibility to go to Devayani and present Selvam’s marriage offer.
The meeting doesn’t go quite as planned. Devayani, in her haughty beauty and celebrity, rejects Sakthivel based on his village background, with derisive contempt, humiliating him for being a rustic lout. The rejection deeply wounds Sakthivel but devastates Selvam, caught between his dream and brutal reality. What emerges is a path of relative pride, resilience, and emotional reconciliation as Selvam comes to terms with what he believed love and identity to be. The rest of the story concerns whether Selvam abandons his ambition and desire or takes on all comers to claim Devayani’s love and, just as importantly, if Devayani herself learns to appreciate the earnestness and truth of real devotion and sincerity.
“Vinnukum Mannukum” is a charming and genuine romantic drama that tackles issues of love versus pride and between social classes. The story is told with honesty, underscored by powerful performances and an evocative soundtrack. It’s a compassionate portrayal of romance that beats beyond the boundaries of wealth and beauty, rendering it a must-see for lovers of emotively charged narratives.
