“Viruman” is a 2022 Tamil action-drama family film written and directed by M. Muthaiah, produced by Suriya under 2D Entertainment. The movie features Karthi as Viruman and Aditi Shankar as Thaenu, in her debut.
The story is set in a rural village in Theni, where “Viruman” (Karthi), a bold and kind-hearted young man, stands up against his own father, “Muniyandi” (Prakash Raj), a selfish and arrogant man who values pride and money above all else. Years ago, Muniyandi’s cruelty caused the death of Viruman’s mother, “Muthulakshmi” (Saranya Ponvannan), and his own sister, Dhanam, leaving Viruman with deep resentment. He decides to stay with his uncles rather than his father, bringing up a sense of purpose to shield his brothers: Selvam, Muthukutty, and Ilango, from the negative influence of their father.
Viruman quietly bears his brothers' disrespect for him due to love. He also falls in love with “Thaenu” (Aditi Shankar), Selvam's sister-in-law, who dislikes him at first and is on the side of Muniyandi. But she learns of Viruman's true nature and becomes his supporter later. Viruman sacrifices for his brothers, such as giving away his late mother's land so Selvam can find a job, despite the fact that Muniyandi did not help him.
Conflicts escalate when Viruman helps Muthukutty win a restaurant auction that Muniyandi tries to sabotage. Later, Viruman tries to gain the approval of their father and also aids Ilango in his romantic endeavours, but is rejected. Muniyandi later learns the truth and dies due to renal failure, even though his greedy family attempt to kill Viruman.
“Viruman” excels as an emotional rural drama filled with action, family values, and strong performances. Karthi gives a heartfelt performance, endearing the film with charisma and intensity. The film emphasises the need for forgiveness, family ties, and resisting toxicity. With its plain story and grounded setting, Viruman will appeal to fans of emotional family entertainers with action and heart.
