“Vithaikkaran” is a Tamil crime thriller film directed by Venki, stars Sathish and Simran Gupta. The plot revolves around a thief-turned-magician who is the prime suspect in a diamond heist worth millions. To add to his woes, he has temporary memory loss and does not know what actually transpired. With gangsters hot on his heels, he tries to gather the facts and figure out a way to escape his fatal situation.
The movie remains on track with its story without going off on tangents. It mixes comedy and thriller, with some truly hilarious moments, especially in its dark humor and self-referential jokes. But the suspense only really gets going towards the end, by which point the pacing problems have already had their effect.
Whereas Vithaikkaaran excels at balancing its crime story with humor, the more serious moments are less effective. A high point is an emotional exchange between two men recalling a woman each loved at different points in their lives: a poignant scene that enriches the narrative.
The most glaring weakness of the film is its editing, which is mostly abrupt and jarring, watered down to some extent the impact of a few well-filmed sequences. The sequence on the metro train, for example, could have been more involved with a less convoluted approach. The background music by VBR also does not make a lasting impact.
Sathish performs well, good in casual and light-hearted scenes but not good enough in the emotional department. The rest of the cast is fine, except for Simran Gupta who is miscast in the film's setting.
Despite its limitations, “Vithaikkaaran” picks up towards the latter half, and the airport sequence is among the best. If the entire film had been as captivating, it would have been a much finer thriller.
