The acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, known for his bold statements as well as his unconventional storytelling, is once again creating buzz in the news, and this time, he is questioning the profound foundation of the term ‘pan-India’ cinema.

Anurag Kashyap’s Blunt Take

While addressing the pan-India cinema, the filmmaker, Anurag Kashyap opened up in a formal conversation with The Hindu. He said, ‘A film becomes pan-India only if it performs pan-India. How can a film be labelled as pan-India even before its creation? The production process takes years, and the entire teams keep on banking on its success. But instead of investing the money in storytelling, it quite often goes for the lavish sets.

Further, the director noted that chasing large numbers often forces filmmakers to compromise on their own narrative. He said, ‘For high earnings, the filmmakers add in some items such as a flashy sequence every few minutes, but this approach doesn’t serve the film on a long-term basis.’

Anurag Kashyap Acknowledges The Success Of Baahubali and KGF

Meanwhile, the filmmaker acknowledged the success of films such as ‘Baahubali’ and ‘KGF.’ He said, ‘Only about one per cent of the films succeed. Still, the industry chases huge figures of eight hundred crores to one thousand crores rupees. In the next five years, there may have been five or six films that hit that mark. But we’re making around one thousand films a year.’

Also, the filmmaker urged the directors to focus on the elements of storytelling instead of relying on formulaic cinema. ‘It all becomes a formula because everyone is chasing the mark of eight hundred crores to one thousand crores rupees.’
