Drawing a sharp contrast with the freedom of expression enjoyed by artists in the West, Akhtar remarked, “Meryl Streep never had to worry about an income tax raid after speaking her mind.” The comment pointedly criticized the atmosphere of subtle intimidation that many believe has gripped India's film fraternity.
