Filmmaker Kabir Khan was emotionally shattered by the box office failure of his dream project 83, as revealed by his wife and actress-TV host Mini Mathur.

In a recent interview with Vicky Lalwani, Mini opened up about the deep personal toll the film’s underperformance had on Kabir, calling it the only time in their 27-year relationship when she saw him completely broken.

83, starring Ranveer Singh, was based on India’s historic 1983 Cricket World Cup win. Despite receiving critical acclaim, its release was severely impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic, with theatres shutting down just a day after it hit screens. Mini said, ‘If there is a film in which he put his whole heart and talent, it was 83. According to him, that film was perfect.’

She described Kabir Khan as a deeply optimistic person, but after 83, he became withdrawn and emotionally trapped. 'He was imprisoned from within. This was his dream film, his childhood love, but it did not get the light it deserved,' she shared.

Despite its commercial fate, the film earned praise from icons like Amitabh Bachchan and Kamal Haasan. Mini admitted that while it brought validation, the pain of not reaching audiences remained Kabir’s deepest creative wound.
