Kamal Haasan Welcomes Verdict In Anna University Sexual Assault Case

Award-winning actor, director, and Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party founder Kamal Haasan took to social media to commend the court’s decision in the Anna University sexual assault case. In response to press inquiries, Haasan praised the judiciary’s contribution to quick justice, expecting the judgment to serve as a deterrent against such atrocious offences committed in seats of learning.

Says justice restores public trust

The case, in which a young female student was brutally raped and murdered by a college staff member, had sparked national outrage across Tamil Nadu. As a result, a summer of protests and sit-ins erupted, driven by students and activists demanding swift action. Today’s guilty conviction of the accused officer today is a huge step in restoring institutional accountability and faith in that accountability within our communities.

Actor calls for safer campuses

Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan responded to the incident by emphasising the need for schools, colleges, and the government to prioritise student safety, particularly for women. He pushed for stricter enforcement of preventive safety measures on campus and rapid response measures to ensure that such a thing does not occur again.

Justice must be swift, says Haasan

Kamal Haasan stated that a timely verdict delivered through a fair process can restore public faith in the legal system, adding that the verdict in question serves as a reminder of this principle. He echoed the administration’s call for students, faculty and the public at large to remain vigilant, report any misconduct and avoid harassment or retaliation.

Haasan’s statement continues a present-day shift toward safer, more inclusive paths of learning in which each student is free to seek information without fear or intimidation.
