For Years, Bollywood has been encashing on the romance involved around young couples or young pairs, while older actors were limited to playing the role of a parent or grandparents or character roles in the films. The trend is slowly changing in the recent times.  The audiences are ready to embrace the mature love stories or family dramas revolving around an older pair in the films and giving them a second chance to show case their talents. The senior stars in the forefront is increasingly relevant. 

It is known fact that the young pairs steal the show with their high energy but now the new trend with the elderly pairs show a steady new side of their love story and togetherness. One that defines their wholesomeness and one learns to appreciate the little joys.   Whether it was Badhaai Ho or the Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani in which Dharmendra and Shabana come together to proclaim their lost love!  The most recent is Max, Min & Meowzaki.  

One of the biggest examples of love story between an older star couple is Badhaai Ho. Its not just the romance the little joys of being together that doesn’t change with the couple having older kids old enough to marry their romance is much alive as seen in the film. Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao played a middle-aged married couple who accidently are expecting their unexpected child much later in their lives when their older son is romancing and dating.  The chemistry between Neena Gupta and Gajraj Rao was unbelievable and relatable. The film proved that compelling stories need not have young romantic leads to be successful films.

Several factors leading to why elderly star pairs are in demand. 

The ever-changing audiences and their preferences.  Today’s viewers prefer to appreciate more realistic, slice of life stories that are romantic, ageing, companionship, empty nests syndromes to retirement and family dynamics that is resonated with a good number of audiences. 

In Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani as the name suggests is romance between Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt the two young lovers in the film. However, the twist in the storytelling is veteran and legendary actor, late Dharmendra and Shabana Azmi breathed life into the film with their love story that took the audience dumb struck to the good old days of Hindi cinema. Their chemistry feels real that struck the right chord among the viewers. 

Few other examples of mature pairs in the film are 102 Not Out or Uunchai and Saaransh demonstrating that stories centred around the older characters in the films and have garnered commercial success. 

Audience have enjoyed performances by the older stars and their on-screen chemistry is familiar bringing nostalgia as well as its build on acting craft rather than glamour alone.  The script writers, screen writers are now creating nuanced roles with over 50 instead of just making them the supporting stars in the films. 

Another reason is the OTT platforms that have changed the storytelling and the film narratives.  Streaming services now encourage matured hero-heroine formulas. The success of OTT streaming platforms have increased their confidence in producing films featuring mature and older protagonists. 

The shift has come about naturally in the changing culture of the entertainment and acknowledging humour, companionship, ambitions and personal growth over and beyond only romance.  Bollywood continues to diversify its storytelling; veteran actors are now no longer side lined. They presence in the film enriches the film’s story and brings in the authenticity and emotional complexity making the elderly star pair not just become a refreshing change but an important part of the contemporary Hindi films. 

There are many more but the most recent one is the upcoming film of Nassar and Nafisa Ali in Max, Min & Mewozaki that brings the two veterans together.  Nasser and Nafisa Ali in a tale that revolves around healing, moving on, and acceptance. 

The film’s trailer was recently unveiled and it struck the chord among the audience older and the younger generation as the peek into the story unravels the love, the companionship and their smaller joys.

Written and directed by Padmakumar Narasimhamurthy, the film is produced by Samiksha Oswal and businessman singer Shael Oswal.  The film is all set for its release and the much-awaited wait ends on July 24th 2026.
