In a dramatic legal turn of events, the accused of assaulting Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan has moved court, requesting his arrest to be declared illegal. The petitioner, Rohit Verma, was arrested last week after he was accused of having a physical fight with the actor at a high-end restaurant in Bandra.

Verma, represented by his lawyer, alleges that the arrest was made without investigation or notice, infringing on the due process of law.  'My client was illegally detained under media pressure without a fair hearing,' said advocate Neeraj Sharma.

The scuffle, reportedly over a seating issue, soon took a turn for the worse, and the local police had to be called in. Saif Ali Khan has been reticent about the incident so far, and his representatives refused to comment.

The court has accepted the petition and sent a notice to the Mumbai Police, calling for a reply within the week. Lawyers say the case would establish a precedent for public and media glare-backed arrests. The court will review Saif Ali Khan's alleged attacker, Mohammad Shariful Islam's claim of unlawful arrest, with the next hearing set for May 13, 2025.
