Mumbai just witnessed a sparkling farewell to Bollywood’s golden era, as the re-release screening of the 1981 masterpiece Umrao Jaan brought together a galaxy of stars.
Under the transformative guidance of the inimitable Rekha, the evening turned into a literal and literal love letter to the magic of vintage cinema and retro elegance. Bhatt garnered acclaim for her graceful homage to Rekha’s Silsila look, donning an ivory chiffon saree by Ami Patel. With bouncy waves, sparkly eyes and traditional jhumka earrings, her tribute was definitely a throwback, while being modern in tandem. It went on to win praise from Rekha, who went on to call it a lovely tribute to the golden era. It wasn’t just Alia clinching all the awards.

Their fleeting moments on stage were a reminder of just how much love and reverence the industry still holds for Umrao Jaan and Rekha’s eternal performance.

The screening was part of a new program at PVR INOX called Timeless Classics, featuring Pyaasa shown in a digitally remastered 4K version. It wasn’t just a nostalgic walk down Memory Lane. From beginning to end, this year's TCM Festival was a brilliant example of the power of classic film – uniting everyone from golden age Hollywood legends to modern day TCM fanatics once again under the same roof.
